Woodwright & Lumber Company
Woodworking Tips
Layout of My Shop
I have recently received a letter (OK, E-Mail)
from a woodworker by the name of Bob and asking about the layout
of his new shop and this was my respondence:
Dear Bob,
Sorry it has taken so long to respond. No real good reason but
that we have been very busy. And this is good, For us.
Just a couple of guideline about setting up your shop:
- Ask yourself what is that I will be building? If it is boats
you have a different problem than if it is shaker boxes.
- How much space am I willing to give up for storage of materials?
If you are going to buy truck loads of lumber this is one thing
or are you going to buy for each project.? Think about fall off
and it's storage. No "good" woodworker every wants
to throw away anything, not even the sawdust.
- How's the flow around the equipment? One of the best shops
I had for efficiency was 12x60. Everything flowed from front
to back. The material came in the front door and the finished
product went out the back door.
Just a couple of idea's to get you started. I would like to
know how the layout is going. Do not be afraid to try different
ways and do not skimp on electrical outlets, cords are a killer
in the shop.
Thank you,
Terry
